Seven US Navy sailors had been injured when the F-35C Lightning II stealth aircraft suffered a “touchdown mishap” throughout a drill

The US Navy is working to get better a aircraft that fell into the South China Sea – which is claimed by China nearly in its entirety – throughout a conflict drill this week that left a number of sailors injured.

Three Navy personnel had been transported to the Philippines for medical remedy, whereas one other 4 had been handled at sea on Monday after a US F-35C Lightning II stealth aircraft suffered a “touchdown mishap on deck whereas USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) was conducting routine flight operations within the South China Sea.”

Whereas the pilot of the aircraft was quickly rescued by a army helicopter after ejecting, the plane itself has not been recovered but.

“I can verify the plane impacted the flight deck throughout touchdown and subsequently fell to the water,” mentioned US Navy spokesperson Lieutenant Nicholas Lingo on Tuesday.

Requested about the potential for China salvaging the plane Lingo mentioned, “We can not speculate on what the PRC’s intentions are on this matter.”

The US Navy has launched an investigation into what went fallacious with the plane in the course of the crash touchdown.

On the time of the accident, Navy supercarriers USS Carl Vinson and USS Abraham Lincoln, amongst different US ships and plane, had been engaged in a army train close to China as tensions between the 2 international locations proceed to escalate.

Rear Admiral Dan Martin boasted in an announcement that the drill “highlights the U.S. Navy’s capability to ship overwhelming maritime power, when referred to as upon, to assist a free and open Indo-Pacific area.”

China has territorial claims to nearly all the South China Sea and has denounced US operations within the space as an infringement of its sovereignty.
