SYDNEY (AP) — A person impersonating North Korean chief Kim Jong Un on Friday disrupted the Australian election marketing campaign when he burst into an occasion that Prime Minister Scott Morrison was attending with lawmaker Gladys Liu.

The impersonator, who later recognized himself by the stage title Howard X, began speaking to gathered media.

“Thanks very a lot. Gladys Liu is the communist candidate for Australia,” he mentioned, earlier than he was interrupted by an aide to Morrison.

“Excuse me, you’ll have to go away. That is essentially the most offensive factor I’ve ever seen in a marketing campaign,” mentioned the aide, Nick Creevey.

The impersonator responded: “Excuse me, you don’t inform the supreme chief what to do. I help Gladys Liu.”

The impersonator left the Melbourne venue quickly after.

In an announcement to The Related Press, Liu mentioned she was centered on delivering outcomes for the Melbourne communities she represents.

“I cannot be distracted by my opponents and their grubby ways,” she mentioned.

Liu was born in Hong Kong and has lived in Australia for greater than 30 years.

The disruption appeared to have been orchestrated partly by longshot Queensland State senate candidate Drew Pavlou, who mentioned on social media that he was good buddies with Howard X and it was “probably the greatest issues we’ve ever managed.”

Pavlou had earlier claimed in posts that Liu had defended China’s management and had ties to the regime. Pavlou described himself as a “younger larrikin” who thought the election was boring and wanted extra pleasure.

Throughout the occasion at Extel Applied sciences in Melbourne, Morrison praised Chinese language Australians.

“I speak concerning the assertive and aggressive nature of the Chinese language authorities, not the Chinese language folks,” Morrison mentioned. “You recognize, Chinese language Australians are the best patriots you might hope for on this nation.”

The disruption got here at a time of heightened tensions between Australia and China, most not too long ago over a safety pact that China signed with the Solomon Islands.

Howard X is well-known for his impersonation of Kim Jong Un. In 2018, he was detained and questioned when he arrived in Singapore days earlier than a summit between the North Korean chief and U.S. President Donald Trump. His actual title is Lee Howard Ho Wun.

Media reported the impersonator was being interviewed by police on Friday.

Australia’s election will likely be held on Might 21 and early voting started this week. Opinion polls have the center-left opposition Labor Social gathering monitoring forward of Morrison’s conservative coalition.
