TAMPA, Fla. (CW44 Information At 10) – Hillsborough County Colleges voted on Tuesday to alter Chamberlain Excessive College’s mascot. Two teams confirmed as much as the board assembly to voice their opinions on the mascot, “The Chiefs.”
“It’s very offensive what goes on,” stated Robert Rosa with the Florida Indigenous Alliance.

“We’ve got individuals who say ‘I get it, let’s transfer on,’ and now we have different individuals saying ‘You understand what? You’re by no means taking the chief away from me,’” stated Terry Cisco with the Chamberlain Excessive College Legacy Alliance.
It’s a combat over the Chamberlain Chiefs mascot.
“That’s appalling, that’s appropriation,” stated Rosa.
Rosa says the mascot is cultural appropriation. He says Native American feathers and face portray are solely meant for non secular and cultural functions.
“These feathers on the head-dresses are given, earned. And for them to make a mockery is simply uncontrolled,” stated Rosa.

Then again, Terry Cisco, with the Chamberlain Excessive College Legacy Alliance, has a distinct view.
“The present college students hear about all of the fantastic tales of pep rallies and so they had been known as pow wows. They see all the images of the chief-ettes and their lovely costuming, they’ll’t do any of it. They’ll’t have any enjoyable right now for concern of offending anyone,” stated Cisco.
Rosa says the usage of the head-dresses and face paint is just not the one concern.
“The rival groups then have the chance to say derogatory marks towards indigenous individuals,” stated Rosa.
So the Florida Indigenous Alliance met in entrance of the Hillsborough County District Workplace on Tuesday, demanding change.
