Marlin Briscoe, first Black quarterback to start in AFL, dead at 76

Marlin Briscoe, who made historical past as the primary Black soccer participant to begin at quarterback within the American Soccer League earlier than successful two Tremendous Bowls as a large receiver, has died at age 76.

His household stated Briscoe died Monday following a battle with pneumonia.

“He’s made an immense contribution to the game,” daughter Angela Marriott instructed the Related Press. “I hope that he continues to get acknowledged for the contributions that he made. He was so happy with that achievement.”

Initially drafted by the Denver Broncos as a cornerback in 1968, Briscoe campaigned to play quarterback and obtained the prospect in late September of that season when he entered a recreation as a reserve.

He made his first begin on Oct. 6, 1968, and went on begin 4 extra video games on the place that season, posting a 2-3 report whereas throwing for 1589 yards and 14 touchdowns as a rookie.

He set profession highs with the Payments in 1970 with 57 receptions, 1,036 receiving yards and eight touchdowns en path to his first and solely Professional Bowl choice.

His former roommate with the Payments, James Harris, was the primary Black quarterback to start an AFC season as a beginning quarterback in 1969.

“It was on the time when Black quarterbacks had been being denied, so that you tried to be sure you had been greatest ready for the chance when it got here,” Harris instructed the AP. “I used to be loads higher off as a result of Briscoe was my roommate.”

Briscoe was lately hospitalized with leg circulation issues, and died at a Norwalk, Calif., medical middle, his household stated.
